5. Mind the light:

Avoid shooting in midday sunlight! Choose illumination that accentuates the most telling aspects of the subject (e.g., back light for translucent egret plumes, sidelight of a rumpled alligator back, and overcast light for the rich color of a cardinal). The subject should look toward the light source, not necessarily at the camera.
